1. Introduction: The Principle of Creative Duality

Mawu-Lisa are not two Voduns, but a single, androgynous, and dual creative deity. Mawu is the feminine principle, associated with the Moon, the night, fertility, intuition, and calm. Lisa is the masculine principle, associated with the Sun, the day, strength, rationality, and action. Together, they represent the totality of the universe, the union of opposites that generates and governs all existence. They are the highest manifestation of God's power.

2. Fundamental Myths

The Fon creation myth tells that Mawu-Lisa gave birth to all the other Voduns. To each, they gave a domain and a task. To Legba, they gave communication; to Gu, iron; to Hevioso, thunder, and so on. After ordering the world, they entrusted their children with its rule, retiring to a higher plane, but continuing to observe creation through the chameleon, their sacred animal.

3. Domains and Symbols

His domain is the cosmos itself. His symbols are the Moon (Mawu) and the Sun (Lisa). The chameleon, which changes color and adapts, is his messenger, symbolizing the adaptability and omnipresence of the creator deity.

4. Archetype and Personality

There are no "children" of Mawu-Lisa in the same way as there are for other Voduns, as they are above the pantheon and represent the totality. However, their influence manifests in all people through the balance between feminine (intuitive, nocturnal) and masculine (rational, diurnal) energies.

5. Relationships and Dialogues

Mawu-Lisa dialogue with Olodumare (Yorùbá) and Nzambi (Bantu), the other conceptions of the Supreme God. The major difference in the Jeje pantheon is that the creator deity is presented in an explicitly dual and androgynous form, with Mawu (the feminine) and Lisa (the masculine) being inseparable for understanding the cosmos, which reveals a remarkable philosophical depth.
