1. Introduction: The Principle of Cutting and Transformation

Gu is the Vodun of iron, war, and technology in the Jeje pantheon. He is the force that shapes nature and society through cutting and forging. Gu is not only the warrior, but also the blacksmith, the farmer, and the hunter. He represents work, progress, and determination. His energy is that of direct action and relentless truth; an oath made in the name of Gu cannot be broken.

2. Fundamental Myths

A Fon myth tells of Gu descending from the heavens to teach humans the art of forging iron. With his tools, he cleared the forest, enabling agriculture, the construction of homes, and the defense of communities. He is the pioneer who, with his machete, makes the earth habitable and civilized. For this reason, he is associated with progress and social order.

3. Domains and Symbols

His domain is the forges, the roads, the battlefields, and all places where metal is worked. His main symbol is the machete (gu-bèssén) and all iron tools. He is often represented by a set of sacred irons. His color is dark blue, the color of steel.

4. Archetype and Personality

Gu's children are straightforward, honest, hard-working, and unafraid of struggle. They are impulsive and strong-willed, but extremely loyal and protective. They don't tolerate injustice or laziness. They are objective and practical, solving problems directly and efficiently. They possess great physical strength and endurance.

5. Relationships and Dialogues

Gu dialogues with Ogun (Yoruba) and Nkosi Mukumbe (Bantu). The three are lords of iron and war in their respective pantheons. The cult of Gu, however, strongly emphasizes his role as guardian of oaths and the given word, being a central deity for the maintenance of social order and ethics in the Jeje community.
