1. Main Features

Otura Meji, known as “The Lord of the Sacred Fire” or “The Guardian of Creative Passion”, is the thirteenth Odu Méji in the Ifá system. Its graphic representation, with a central double line surrounded by single lines, symbolizes the sacred flame that burns at the center of all things, radiating energy and transformation. This Odu represents fire in all its manifestations: passion, creativity, divine inspiration, purification, and the transformative power of fiery energy. Otura governs sacred sexuality, fertility, artistic creation, and the ability to inspire others through one's own enthusiasm. It is the Odu of artists, passionate lovers, charismatic leaders, and all those who carry within themselves the sacred fire of creation.

2. Interpretation According to William Bascom

In “Ifa Divination,” William Bascom documents Otura Meji as an Odu of great creative and transformative energy, often associated with situations involving passion, creativity, and the need for authentic expression. Bascom notes that Otura's verses (ese) often tell stories about creative power, both in its constructive and destructive forms, and emphasize the importance of properly channeling the fiery energy. This Odu promises great creative power and inspiration to those who respect it, but warns of the dangers of uncontrolled passion and misdirected energy. According to Bascom, Otura teaches that the sacred fire must be cultivated with wisdom and responsibility.

3. Myths and Associated Stories (Ese Ifá)

One of the most powerful myths of Otura Meji, recorded by Bascom, tells how Otura brought the sacred fire to humanity. In the beginning of time, humans lived in darkness and cold, unaware of the power of fire. Otura, moved by compassion, decided to steal a flame from the sacred fire of the Orishas and bring it to Earth. He hid the flame in his heart and descended to the mortal world. Upon arrival, he opened his chest and released the flame, which spread rapidly, bringing light, warmth, and the ability to transform raw matter into beautiful and useful things. For this act of love and sacrifice, Otura became known as “Otura Alágbára” – “Otura, the Bearer of Strength”This story teaches that true creative power comes from love and the desire to serve others.

Spiritual Reflection

Otura Meji teaches us that we all carry within us a sacred flame—the divine spark of creativity and passion for life. This Odu reminds us that our responsibility is not to extinguish this flame out of fear or conformity, but to learn to nurture it wisely and direct it toward the greater good. Otura's energy invites us to live with authentic passion, creating beauty and inspiring others through our own enthusiasm for existence.

"The wisdom of Otura Meji teaches us that life without passion is like a fire without flame—it can have all the wood in the world, but it will never produce light or heat. To understand this sign is to understand the sacred power of creativity and passion directed toward good."
