Four Cowries - Basic System

The Four Cowrie Shell System

The four-cowrie system represents a simplified and accessible form of oracle consultation, derived from more complex systems such as Eerindilogun. It uses only four cowrie shells, offering direct answers and basic guidance for everyday questions.

System Fundamentals

This system is based on the interpretation of five possible positions, determined by the number of open cowries that fall (from 0 to 4). Each position has specific meanings and practical guidance for the client.

The Five Positions

0 Open Buzios – Oyeku

Total denial, obstacles, need for transformation. Time for reflection, necessary ebó, avoid important decisions.

1 Open Whelk – Okana

Difficulties, struggles, and perseverance are necessary. Persist with caution, seek spiritual support, and be patient.

2 Open Cowries – Ejife

Balance, definitive response, stability. A balanced situation allows decisions to be made safely.

3 Open Búzios – Etawa

Positive response with reservations, caution required. Yes, but with attention to detail, confirmation recommended.

4 Opened Cowries – Alafia

Total approval, blessings, harmony. A clear path, blessings from the Orishas, success in your endeavors.

Consultation Methodology

The process includes preparing the ritual space, consecrating the cowries, invoking the Orishas, concentrating on the question, formulating the question clearly, throwing the four cowries, counting the open cowries, interpreting the resulting position, and providing practical guidance.

Types of Appropriate Questions

The four-cowrie system is ideal for yes-or-no questions, guidance on simple decisions, confirmation of intuitions, verification of offerings, and quick everyday consultations.

Limitations and Applications

Due to its simplicity, this system has limitations, as it doesn't offer complex diagnoses or elaborate prescriptions. It serves as an introduction to divination, confirmation of complex consultations, emergency consultations, and training for developing oracular sensitivity.
