1. Introduction: The Principle of Cyclic Motion
Bessen, also called Dan, is the Vodun of continuous movement, wealth, and renewal. He is represented by the serpent that moves sinuously across the earth and the rainbow that connects Earth to Heaven. Bessen is the force that ensures the continuity of life, the circulation of wealth, and the renewal of natural cycles. He is the deity of longevity and fortune.
2. Fundamental Myths
The main myth tells of Bessen as the serpent that encircles the Earth, preventing it from crumbling. He feeds on precious stones found deep within the earth, and is therefore associated with wealth. Like a rainbow, he serves as a transport for Hevioso and other Voduns between heaven and earth, serving as a messenger of good fortune.
3. Domains and Symbols
His domain is the heavens (as a rainbow) and the earth (as a serpent). His symbols are the metal serpent (dan-gbekan) and beads of all colors, representing the serpent's scales and the colors of the rainbow. His colors are green and yellow, or all colors combined.
4. Archetype and Personality
Bessen's children are persevering, elegant, vain, and always on the move. They undergo major transformations throughout their lives, but they always adapt and renew themselves. They are patient and cunning in their pursuit of wealth. They dislike routine and are always seeking new opportunities.
5. Relationships and Dialogues
Bessen dialogues with Òṣùmàrè (Yorùbá) and Angorô (Bantu). The three represent the rainbow serpent deity. In the Jeje cult, Bessen is worshipped as an androgynous deity or as a pair, Dan (the male serpent) and Ayida Wedo (the female rainbow), who together ensure the harmony and continuity of the universe.
