1. Introduction: The Principle of the Earth and Its Mysteries
Sakpata is the Vodun of the Earth, a deity of great power and duality. He is the lord of contagious diseases, such as smallpox, that spring from the bowels of the earth. But at the same time, he is the only one who can cure them. Sakpata is also the lord of the wealth that comes from the soil, grains, and minerals. He is the earth itself: it can give us both disease and death, as well as sustenance and life.
2. Fundamental Myths
An important myth tells that Sakpata, because he was so feared, was forbidden from entering the pantheon of the Voduns of heaven. He then settled on Earth and became its king. From the sky, the other Voduns could not make rain, and the earth dried up. From the earth, Sakpata prevented the vapors from rising to form clouds. A great crisis arose, resolved by Legba, the messenger. The myth teaches that the power of Earth (Sakpata) and Heaven (Hevioso) must be in balance.
3. Domains and Symbols
His domain is the dry, hot land, the interior of the earth, and places of epidemics. His main symbol is the Sakpata-koko, a straw scepter similar to the Xaxará, with which he spreads and sweeps away diseases. He dresses in straw to conceal the mysteries of life and death over which he rules.
4. Archetype and Personality
Sakpata's children are generally introverted, observant, and somewhat melancholic. They are stubborn and can be quite harsh, but they possess a deep sense of responsibility and compassion. They often experience great trials and illnesses in life, but they become stronger and often excellent healers.
5. Relationships and Dialogues
Sakpata dialogues with Obalúayé/Omolú (Yorùbá) and Kavungo (Bantu). The three are the lords of the earth and of illness and healing. The cult of Sakpata in the Fon pantheon is extremely important and complex, and he is considered a "king" on a par with Hevioso.
